Hackers Values
These are the values to which people in the Cogniz Hackathon community should aspire:
-
Be Friendly and Welcoming:
-
Create an inclusive atmosphere where everyone feels valued.
-
-
Be Patient:
-
Recognize that people have different communication styles and that not everyone is using their native language, which can affect meaning and tone.
-
-
Be Thoughtful:
-
Engage in productive communication, considering how your words might be interpreted. Sometimes, it’s best to refrain from commenting.
-
-
Be Respectful:
-
Honor differences of opinion and engage respectfully with others.
-
-
Be Charitable:
-
Assume good faith in the arguments of others. Strive to understand the reasons behind disagreements rather than seeking to argue.
-
-
Avoid Destructive Behavior:
-
Derailing: Stay on topic. If you wish to discuss something else, start a new conversation.
-
Unconstructive Criticism: Don’t just condemn; offer or seek suggestions for improvement.
-
Snarking: Avoid pithy, unproductive comments.
-
Sensitive Issues: Be cautious when discussing potentially offensive topics to prevent unnecessary conflict.
-
Microaggressions: Avoid behaviors or comments that can be perceived as hostile or derogatory.
-
-
People Are Complicated:
-
Expect misunderstandings and strive to resolve them calmly. Avoid being defensive or assigning blame. Give people the benefit of the doubt and aim to de-escalate conflicts when they arise.
-
These values help foster a positive, productive, and respectful environment within the Cogniz Hackathon community.
2
Unwelcome Behavior:
These actions are explicitly forbidden in Conniz Hackathon spaces: Expressing or provoking: insulting, demeaning, hateful, or threatening remarks; discrimination based on age, nationality, race, (dis)ability, gender (identity or expression), sexuality, religion, or similar personal characteristic; bullying or systematic harassment; unwelcome sexual advances, including sexually explicit content. Excessive advertisement of unnecessary or non-beneficial commercial products and services. Posting spam-like content that disrupts the environment of the community.
3
Moderation and Enforcement
Please understand that speech and actions have consequences, and unacceptable behavior will not be tolerated. When participating in areas governed by the code of conduct, you should embody the "Hacker values." Violations of the Code of Conduct will result in a warning and a request to stop, with possible removal of messages by community moderators. Repeated offenses may lead to a temporary or permanent ban from the community.
On your first offense, you will receive a written notice from a community moderator, and you may be asked to apologize publicly or directly to the offended party, depending on the severity of the behavior. A second offense will result in a temporary ban from the community, ranging from 3 days to a month, based on the seriousness of the behavior. This ban serves as an official warning, not a permanent exclusion.
On a third offense, you may be permanently removed from the community, with an indefinite suspension of your account and possible public identification. This procedure serves as a guideline for moderation and enforcement of community conduct. However, the Working Group or Hack Club staff may take any action deemed appropriate, including immediate removal from the community.
Being banned from the Hack Club community may also prevent participation in community events such as local club meetings, hackathons, or challenges. Regardless of any disciplinary actions, you can always contact the Code of Conduct working group. If you have any questions or concerns about our decisions, please reach out directly.
